Petrified wood forms when fallen trees are buried by sediment and their organic material is gradually replaced by silica, such as agate and quartz, over millions of years while preserving the original wood grain. Much of Arizona’s petrified wood comes from Triassic‑age forests, approximately 200–225 million years old, that once grew along ancient river systems and inland seas.
